SoundCloud has already proposed a new business model for streaming. Fans pay their $$ to the artists they listen to -- aka fan-powered royalties.
UMG has not signed off on this approach, and has instead countered with a different model it calls artist-centric royalties.
Universal Music is in talks with SoundCloud to overhaul how streamers pay artists.
It's having/had similar conversations with Deezer and Tidal -- aka the small fries.
