Twitter Update

Hey there! Due to the recent policy changes implemented by Twitter, I regret to inform you that FinBrowser is currently unable to display any new Tweets. I know this might be disappointing, as Twitter is a valuable source of information and updates for many of us. However, I want to assure you that I am actively working on finding alternative solutions and exploring ways to reintegrate Twitter sources into this website. I appreciate your patience and understanding during this time of transition.

I certainly hope the Biden Administration realizes that it needs to compete with China financially speaking -- China's pull back from financing low income countries should in fact be viewed an enormous opportunity for the G-7 to step up with some real money. 1/2

The Biden admin wants to establish guardrails around the bilateral relationship to prevent it from evolving into outright conflict. Beijing, on the other hand, appears less interested in the specifics than in general principles underpinning the relations.

In China, as this article notes, low inflation mainly indicates Beijing's great difficulty in boosting domestic demand. It isn't really a good thing.

Biggest take-away from Shangri-La Dialogue: why can't we all just get along? Rapprochement greatly needed now before there is no way back. It's like two parents arguing and we are close to where things said just can't be taken back.....

This should be a time of a reset, a time to re-establish a connection, especially where the world needs/will need the US-China relationship to address coming global economic, climate and conflict issues. 7/8

There is good and bad in both countries (as there is everywhere). Engagement is not the solution, but it IS the foundation. Talking, even if in elevated tones, keeps the opportunity open for progress. 6/8

A great thread (as always) and potential consequences for China of further RMB depreciation.

Michael Pettis
1/7 While the RMB may or may not depreciate further, a weaker RMB will most certainly not aid economic recovery. This widely-held belief is based on a misunderstanding of the Chinese economy and the way in which depreciation works.

A good read for perspective on how the party sees itself, which works when people are satiated (food, housing, oppty). The stress test comes when structural systems start to crack. In western democracy, people are given a choice. Choice may be a salve when structure breaks down.

Thomas des Garets Geddes
#Democracy is another field in which Beijing is competing with the West. #China’s aim may not be to convince others to adopt its political system, but it appears intent on demonstrating that 🇨🇳 democracy is superior to what the West has to offer. THREAD🧵
