The Biden admin wants to establish guardrails around the bilateral relationship to prevent it from evolving into outright conflict. Beijing, on the other hand, appears less interested in the specifics than in general principles underpinning the relations.

Biggest take-away from Shangri-La Dialogue: why can't we all just get along? Rapprochement greatly needed now before there is no way back. It's like two parents arguing and we are close to where things said just can't be taken back.....

A good read for perspective on how the party sees itself, which works when people are satiated (food, housing, oppty). The stress test comes when structural systems start to crack. In western democracy, people are given a choice. Choice may be a salve when structure breaks down.
