"I don't like the defeatism, that everything is lost already. It's not true." Great way to open the #BNEFSummit Munich with @AnnMettler on Answering the US IRA @BloombergNEF
2022 was the first year investment in clean energy matched investment in fossil fuels according to @BloombergNEF’s @albertwycheung
2023 could be the first year clean energy investment surpasses fossil fuel investment 🤯

Some important findings from @BloombergNEF's seventh Electric Vehicle Outlook, via @colinmckerrache:
🔋EV sales will surge
🛢️EVs displace 1.5 million barrels a day of oil demand
🏭 Battery factory spending is on track
🚨 Lithium has a supply challenge
EV cells repurposed into scooter packs and leisure batteries, replacement modules for Nissan Leaf with NMC cells to markets like Sri Lanka, Georgia and Jordan. The more the EV market matures the more diverse the aftermarket gets. And creates tonnes of opportunities.
It’s not…
Gotion launched #LMFP #batteries, pack 190Wh/kg, higher than NCM523, approaching NCM622, supporting #electricvehicles 1000 km range, scheduled to start mass production in 2024.

Silicon represents the biggest change to lithium-ion anodes in 30 years
Silicon will improve energy density on a Wh/kg and Wh/l basis
But silicon's big promise is in reducing anode costs, in order to realise this silicon costs will need to be <$70/kg

IRA Credit with Panasonic Gigafactory.
Panasonic is booking the full $35 kWh credit for cells produced in Nevada. Per their latest IR slides. 40 billion yen total.
@mjlacey kicking off Day 2 of @2030Battery meeting. Immensely important topic - from philosophy of (battery) science and technology to concrete practical advice. And 🙏 for mentioning (again) our Ten Ways paper.
We are delighted to see the recent Nature Communications perspective article on the future of Li-based batteries discussed by @mjlacey in the @2030Battery meeting. battchat #batterytwitter

Another interesting suggestion for the 'condensed matter' electrolyte are metal organic frameworks (MOFs)
These materials can enable high lithium transport and limit lithium dendrite growth. They also self-assemble, similar to the description in CATLs press release

James Frith
What do we know about CATL's "Condensed Matter" battery?
Not a lot!
But we can speculate a 🧵 1/8
#battchat
What do we not know yet is the cost of these cells, if any critical materials are used, how developed the supply chains for these components are, what the cycle life of the cells are.
What are the implications?
The cells are slated for us in aviation initially, with an automotive cell under development.
If using conversion materials, power density is likely to be much lower than current lithium-ion. So even when used in EVs....
3. It uses innovative anode materials.
If using a conversion cathode material, the anode will most likely have to contain the lithium when the cell is assembled. So it likely either uses a lithium metal anode, or a lithium alloy.
...it probably requires the use of a hybrid battery pack that can use power orientated cells for acceleration and breaking and energy orientated cells for distance. So lucky CATL has its new Qilin battery pack!
This would be a similar approach to that taken by @OurNextEnergy1
2. It has a condensed state electrolyte
To me this is could be a gaseous electrolyte that can be condensed to a liquid, or even a solid, at relatively low pressures
Companies like @South8Tech and @innolith have been working on these electrolytes for a number of years
1. It has an ultra-high energy cathode.
To me this suggests some sort of conversion reaction material, like sulfur of iron sulfide.
@SolidPowerInc showed successful results with iron sulfide back in 2021, so it is possible that CATL has also developed a similar material.
We are delighted to see how a perspective article published recently with us ( strengthens the connection between academic and industrial research communities! Well done @mjlacey @JamesTFrith @UldericoUlissi 👏👏👏👏
Nice to revisit my old group at @chem_angstrom and talk about our (@JamesTFrith @UldericoUlissi) recent perspective. Great attendance and especially happy that Prof Josh Thomas stopped by to share some anecdotes!

Founders this is crucial.
If you raise $2M on $10M. Even if you do not hit it out of the park, you can raise a next round at a decent valuation mark up.
If you raise $5M on $25M, you HAVE to smash it and really smash it, to even get a 1.5x on that valuation within 18 months.
IRA + 7 months
What’s happened in the US EV supply chain since IRA passed? My students and I are tracking it:
36 major new projects announced
30,000 estimated jobs
$40 billion in announced capital investment 🏗️
Here is what is new since last month. A short 🧵 1/5
